Roblox India Appoints Sunil Rao as Managing Director
Roblox, the global platform known for immersive gaming and user-generated experiences, has named Sunil Rao as Managing Director for its India operations, marking a significant step in strengthening its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
Rao, who will assume his role in May, brings extensive experience in technology strategy and market expansion. He will serve as Roblox’s senior representative in India, leading local strategy execution and collaborating with regional teams and partners to accelerate growth.
A key priority for Rao will be supporting India’s rapidly expanding community of developers and creators. He aims to empower local studios to leverage Roblox’s suite of tools, enabling them to scale their creations and unlock new revenue opportunities. The platform’s accessible tools for coding, design, and entrepreneurship have already contributed to the global creator community earning over $1.5 billion in 2025.
Speaking on his appointment, Rao highlighted India’s vast potential: “Roblox is shaping the future of interactive entertainment and creator-driven experiences. India’s scale, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit offer an incredible opportunity. I look forward to fostering a dynamic and inclusive ecosystem that supports developers and creators nationwide.”
Ensuring user safety—particularly for younger audiences—will be a central focus for Rao, alongside aligning Roblox’s operations with India’s regulatory standards to build a secure and trustworthy platform for long-term growth.
Zhen Fang, Vice President of International at Roblox, emphasized the importance of the Indian market, stating that the country holds immense promise due to its strong pool of creative talent. He added that Rao’s expertise in scaling businesses across diverse regions makes him well-suited to lead Roblox’s next phase of expansion in India.
Before joining Roblox, Rao was part of the leadership team at Amazon Web Services (AWS), where he led strategy and corporate business development across the Asia-Pacific and Japan region. He also served as a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, working closely with startups and founders to drive innovation and scale technology ventures.
Earlier in his career, Rao played a pivotal role in building developer ecosystems at major technology companies, including Symbian, Nokia, and Google—experience that aligns closely with Roblox’s creator-first vision.
With Rao at the helm, Roblox is poised to deepen its engagement in India, unlocking new opportunities for creators and contributing to the country’s growing digital economy.
