Australia’s Outdoor Ad Sector Hits Strong Q1 Growth
Melbourne, Australia – June 2026: Australia’s out-of-home (OOH) advertising sector has started 2026 on a strong note, recording a 7.4% increase in net media revenue during the first quarter, highlighting the growing importance of outdoor advertising in reaching younger consumers.
According to the Outdoor Media Association (OMA), OOH advertising revenue climbed to $359 million in Q1 2026, compared to an adjusted $334 million during the same period last year. The impressive performance follows a record-breaking 2025, when the industry generated $1.45 billion in annual revenue, marking an 11.4% year-on-year growth.
Brands Look Beyond Social Media to Reach Gen Z
As digital fatigue rises among younger consumers, brands are increasingly exploring alternatives to traditional online advertising. While Gen Z is often seen as highly connected to digital platforms, recent studies suggest they are becoming more selective about the advertising they engage with.
A 2025 study by YouthInsight found that 81% of Australians aged 14 to 29 dislike advertisements, but the frustration is mainly directed at ads that feel intrusive, repetitive, or irrelevant. This shift is encouraging marketers to invest in channels that offer visibility without disrupting the user experience.
Outdoor advertising is emerging as a preferred solution because it integrates naturally into daily life rather than following users across websites and social media feeds.
OOH Continues to Deliver Massive Reach
The OMA reports that outdoor advertising reaches 97% of Australians every week, equivalent to approximately 22 million people aged 14 and above. Around eight in ten Australians leave their homes daily, generating nearly 95 million trips every day, creating valuable opportunities for brands to connect with consumers in real-world environments.
Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) remains a major growth driver, now accounting for 76.7% of total OOH revenue, reflecting advertisers’ increasing demand for dynamic and data-driven campaigns.
Gen Z Responds Strongly to Outdoor Advertising
Research from YouGov highlights the influence of OOH advertising on younger audiences. The study found that:
- 54% of Gen Z consumers search online for a product after seeing it on a billboard or poster.
- 48% recommend products they discover through outdoor advertising.
These findings demonstrate that physical advertising can successfully drive digital engagement and word-of-mouth recommendations.
Social Media Restrictions Add New Opportunities
Australia’s updated regulations surrounding social media use are also reshaping the advertising landscape. Since December 10, 2025, many social media platforms have restricted account access for users under the age of 16.
The policy change has prompted brands to reconsider their dependence on social media platforms for youth engagement and explore alternative channels that offer broad reach and stronger brand visibility.
Outdoor Advertising Positioned for Long-Term Growth
With Gen Z representing 18.2% of Australia’s population, and Gen Z alongside Millennials expected to contribute nearly 48% of retail spending by 2030, marketers are actively seeking effective ways to connect with these influential consumer groups.
As concerns around screen fatigue, ad saturation, and digital trust continue to grow, outdoor advertising is proving to be a powerful channel that combines scale, visibility, and credibility. The strong start to 2026 suggests Australia’s OOH industry is well-positioned for sustained growth in the years ahead.
