IPL 2026: AI Brands Replace Fantasy Apps as Biggest Advertisers
The advertising landscape of the Indian Premier League is shifting once again. In 2024, Dream11 and other fantasy gaming platforms dominated IPL ad breaks. By 2026, artificial intelligence companies like Google and OpenAI are taking center stage. Every IPL cycle reflects a broader industry trend. Telecom brands led during the 4G expansion. Fintech companies surged during the UPI boom. Fantasy gaming platforms peaked during the pandemic years. Now, AI is emerging as the newest big spender.
Google’s Big IPL Bet with Gemini
Google has made a strong move by signing a ₹270 crore, three-year deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This makes its AI platform Google Gemini an official IPL sponsor.
In addition, Google secured the co-presenting sponsor slot with JioStar across both TV and digital platforms for IPL 2026. This premium placement ensures massive visibility throughout the tournament.
The deal also comes with category exclusivity—meaning competitors like OpenAI won’t get co-presenting exposure during IPL matches.
OpenAI Focuses on WPL
While locked out of IPL’s top-tier sponsorship, OpenAI is still active in cricket. Its flagship product ChatGPT is already a Premier Partner for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), signaling a parallel strategy to build brand recall.
Filling the ₹7,000 Crore Gap
The ban on real-money gaming ads left a massive void—estimated at nearly ₹7,000 crore annually. AI companies are now stepping in to capture that space, reshaping the IPL advertising ecosystem.
Google, in particular, is leveraging the IPL to promote a full suite of products:
- Gemini AI
- AI-powered Search features
- Pixel smartphones
- Google Pay (GPay)
- Android ecosystem
Co-presenting sponsors typically receive around 180 seconds of ad time per match, giving Google repeated exposure to millions of viewers.
IPL as India’s AI Adoption Engine
With IPL 2026 ad revenue expected to cross ₹5,200 crore, the tournament remains one of India’s most powerful media platforms. For Google, this isn’t just about advertising—it’s about habit-building.
Instead of teaching AI through tutorials or webinars, the strategy is simple: place AI in front of users where they already spend hours—watching cricket.
Ads vs Experience: What Will Drive AI Adoption?
While IPL ads can create awareness at scale, long-term adoption will likely depend on real product experience. Ads may spark curiosity, but consistent usage comes from how useful and reliable the technology feels in everyday life.
In India’s fast-growing digital ecosystem, IPL campaigns can ignite interest—but the real winner will be the platform that delivers value beyond the screen.
